    Non è stato facile, lo ammetto, conciliare la mia estate con Underworld. Non entrava nella borsa del mare, in valigia mi faceva rischiare il sovrapprezzo del biglietto aereo, e poi i polsi sempre a rischio slogatura sulla sdraio... Finivo sempre per piantarlo per attaccare con qualcosa di più maneggevole. Anche una volta esaurite le esigue ferie, era poco invitante con le sue scorie e le sue bombe H e i suoi angeli del Bronx e le sue squadre di baseball finite in California. Il romanzo non difetta di leggibilità nonostante la struttura complessa e De Lillo è stilisticamente enorme anche se non ha l'imprevedibilità e l'estro di un Pynchon o di un - sigh - Wallace, il mio problema erano i personaggi che sembravano funzionare tutti allo stesso modo, pensare come fossero un unico personaggio - Don De Lillo.
    Ma alla fine Underworld ripaga di tutto, della sua mole, dei suoi mood afflitti, dei suoi dialoghi deprimenti, quando una mano sapiente spazza via i rifiuti per lasciare spazio ad una sola parola. Quella che mancava.

  • I always thought a four-range rating system to be incomplete: a fifth star is needed to mark masterworks.
    This novel definitely gets five stars, as far as I'm concerned.

    And I don't care what other people say, to me DeLillo is better than both Pynchon and Wallace.

    Dopo quaranta pagine di totale frustrazione ho rimediato in biblioteca la copia in italiano...così ho capito perchè in inglese proprio non riuscivo a cogliere il senso di frasi intere. DeLillo ha una scrittura molto espressiva, di grande impatto ma per nulla semplice (per quel che riguarda il mio livello di inglese) da seguire.
    Devo dire che la cosa che mi è piaciuta di più del romanzo è proprio il modo di scrivere, la ricchezza del linguaggio.
    All'inizio, diciamo per le prime 200 pagine, ero entusiasta: mi piaceva l'alternarsi dei punti di vista e il saltellare avanti e indietro nel tempo della storia.
    Però il gioco è bello se dura poco. 700 è più pagine così sono troppe. Mi ha stancato, ho rischiato di perdere il filo più volte. Alla fine ho trovato il romanzo faticoso, anche se i temi trattati erano interessanti - l'America e le sue fobie.

Our lives, our half century.
