    There seemed a lot of open plots left dangling, not enough action during most of it, and not enough revelations or "things that make you go Mmm".

    I was expecting ... I don't know ... something different. The book spent more time playing with the imagined technologies, than the plot.

    There seemed a lot of open plots left dangling, not enough action during most of it, and not enough revelations or "things that make you go Mmm".

    Good writer though. I would definitely check out some of his other works.

    這本新科雨果獎得主的故事可以看出是從 Vinge 之前的得獎中篇 "Fast Times at Fairmont High" (2001) 加以擴充修改而成。同樣有 Fairmont High，同樣有 Gu 姓家庭和小伙子 Juan Orozco，然而故事的重點和主要敘述對象卻有了重大的轉移。

    本書改以 Robert Gu 為主角（從 William 改名為 Robert 據 Wikipedia 說是套用編碼學常用的 Alice 傳訊息給 Bob 的「典故」，所以 Gu 家第二代夫妻剛好一個叫 Alice、一個叫 Bob）；他原本是享譽全世界的詩人，但私底下竟是顧人怨的可憎 老頭（難怪會姓 Gu？！）在罹患阿茲海默症之後很幸運地獲得治癒，因此有了重新 開始人生的機會。故事就從他進入 Fairmont High 學習適應新社會所需技能開始展開。

    由於 Robert Gu 的年紀推算起來是 1950 年出生的人，再加上他自視甚高、極易傷人的性格，自然很難融入 2025 年高中生活（我就沒辦法想像我老爸和小喵 Little Lynn 一起讀高中的場景......）不過讀者就可以很「方便」地跟隨 他的視野認識及學習「未來」，這也是本書的最精彩、最值得討論的 部分。Vinge 的成功之處在於塑造出一個「可信」的社會，高科技不只是少數叛客 所專屬的酷炫玩意，而真正落實到日常生活，甚至青少年文化當中。 讀者一方面必須強迫自己熟悉這充斥著使用者介面科技的新世界，一 方面也藉由 Robert Gu 的角度思索其文化層面的意義。

    相對來說，故事的另一主軸，跨國性的入侵行動，就沒那麼具有說服 力了。書中米國霸權漸漸被多極政治體系所取代（其中的背景頗值得 玩味，可惜沒說得很清楚，倒衍生出幾條頗為有趣的枝節），在大家 都不是吃素的情況下，問題恐怕只會多不會少。計畫的執行過程，特 別是利用圖書館數位化的表面幌子看起來十分精彩，然而發動如此規 模的「陰招」，最後收尾時居然還能如此輕鬆，總令我覺得不太可思 議。原來中篇裡暗中幫助 Juan 的神祕同學也在這邊變換成更具典故的角色，一樣神祕感十足，讓人 不禁聯想到是不是 singularity 後的 AI 產物。

    大概是職業的關係，我反而對 Fairmont High 的教育目的及方針比較關注。這種把青少年和重入社會的老年人合在 一起作成撒尿牛丸的教學方式有點像是職校進修部的學制，但他們教 的課程也還真不是普通的活用。甚至最後快樂結局的計畫作業期末展 示簡直把高中教育當作實際職場的 R&D 來搞，Vinge 會不會太樂觀了嘎～～～

    有時想想，像本書這樣的作品其實還滿符合國內科幻推廣的主流價值 ，而且也讓讀者對未來有更深刻、更具體的「期待」。這樣至少比五 十年前的「願景」或是叛客系的「未來發想」來的「逼真」吧？至於 行內讀者大可以不管這些，直接拿本書來和 Charles Stross 的 Accelerando / Glasshouse 來作（後）singularity 世界大對照還比較值得些。（這兩本都還沒看，真慚愧......）

    Onreading impressions: Imagina que eres un bastardo insensible... // Parece una distopía, pero no lo es // Cierto problema de "tono emocional" que mejora progresivamente (añadido después: mejora mucho) // Primera descripción creíble del ciberespacio que leo // ¡¡Sale Pratchett!!

    Afterreading impressions: Pues nada, que no retiro nada de lo dicho onreading. El libro está bien escrito, tiene recursos, los personajes son interesantes y la ciencia ficción estimulante. Apunta a una reflexión sobre el impacto de internet (y allegados) en la sociedad que a mi me parecía que iba a ir en una dirección y al final va en otra, un poco más "estética" y superficial, pero es un magnífico alimento para la imaginación. El final se dilata y se dilata y se dilata y se dilata hasta bastante después del desenlace de la trama principal, pero en realidad es para contar cosas que merecían ser contadas, así que no problem. Bastante recomendable.
