A timeless tale by the incomparable Kate DiCamillo, complete with stunning full-color plates by Bagram Ibatoulline, honors the enduring power of love.

"Someone will come for you, but first you must open your heart. . . ."

Once, in a house on Egypt Street, there lived a china rabbit named Edward Tulane. The rabbit was very pleased with himself, and for good reason: he was owned by a girl named Abilene, who treated him with the utmost care and adored him completely.

And then, one day, he was lost.

Kate DiCamillo takes us on an extraordinary journey, from the depths of the ocean to the net of a fisherman, from the top of a garbage heap to the fireside of a hoboes' camp, from the bedside of an ailing child to the bustling streets of Memphis. And along the way, we are shown a true miracle — that even a heart of the most breakable kind can learn to love, to lose, and to love again.

This is very deep, yet fantastical journey of a narcissistic toy rabbit, who finds out what really matters in a doll's life. I loved this book. When I received it, I was hesitant thinking that a story about a toy rabbit would be less than satisfactory. I couldn't have been more incorrect. I loved this story so much. It really struck a chord deep inside. There wasn't a single thing I hated except the parts that had to be sad. It is such a heartfelt journey that the reader goes on with Edward. I felt so connected the entire time. I remember when I was young, I loved dolls and treated them like his first owner treated him. The second thing I connected with in this book was how upset the young boy was when Edward became broken. I remember loving my dolls so much, that when they broke, I would have done anything to have them back to the way they were. The final thing I connected to was a quote that one doll said that basically said that a dolls job is to love unconditionally if you don't plan on doing that, then the whole journey is pointless. That is such a deep thing to have in a children's book. It's simple enough for all to understand deeply.
This book was actually recommended to me by one of my students. He is a student who is not a reader, and is more into sports books. I was really surprised at how much he loved this book. I would use this in my classroom by having them read about change in a characters personality and character. We would discuss how it affects the way the reader perceives the rest of the book's world.

This is one of the most touching stories for children that I've read. Edward starts off as an unfeeling rabbit until an accident disrupts his spoiled, sheltered life. After experiencing cruelty and heartbreak, Edward learns to love and appreciate the many people that he meets along the way. "Edward Tulane" is filled with a wonderful cast of characters, beautiful illustrations, and an important lesson that all of us have to learn.

  • This is a modern-day Velveteen Rabbit story.

Poor Edward. He was loved by so many, but had trouble loving in return . . . at least until it was too late.

Love hurts, as the china rabbit learns so well.

While the ending was telegraphed, it was so good.

  • Excellent story. Edward begins his life as a beautiful but cold being, and after much journeying and living and loving, comes to understand all he was missing.
