The classics are rapidly receding from public consciousness, and modern revisions of them, such as the film O Brother, Where Art Thou, are in genuine danger of never being linked to their original inspiration. Noted classicist Stanley Lombardo breathes new life into one of the most famous and beloved ancient works with an engaging and vibrant audio performance of Homer's Iliad. This state-of-the-art compact disc recording provides high-quality access to one of the greatest works in world literature.

"Gripping . . . Lombardo’s achievement is all the more striking when you consider the difficulties of his task . . . He manages to be respectful of Homer’s dire spirit while providing . . . some wonderfully fresh refashioning of his Greek. The result is a vivid and disarmingly hardbitten reworking of a great classic."--Daniel Mendelsohn, The New York Times Book Review

  • The Iliad by Homer translated by Stephen Mitchell: review

We know very little about The Iliad’s emergence; a complex mixture of oral and written composition made what we now have, an epic poem about the effects of the wrath of Achilles on a few days in the Trojan War. Scholars believe the poem appeared in t ... (read full critics)

  • A tale of two timeless epics

It is oddly moving, at a time when mention of the name ‘Homer’ invariably conjures up thoughts of donuts, to know that the author of the Odyssey remains the first classical author to whom most children are introduced. At my daughters’ primary school, ... (read full critics)

    A 2000 year old blockbuster

It's a 2700 year old blockbuster: lots of action, heroes, pride, fighting and gore. It's a 2700 year old blockbuster: lots of action, heroes, pride, fighting and gore. Awesomely described action, extensive and brilliant metaphors, hundreds of personae vividly introduced in only a few phrases, and the occasional dull part about horseriding and descriptions of wealth. But above all, lots of verbs. Homers poetry never stands still, it is continuously in motion.

The Iliad is poetry in action. And it rocks.

  • There's a lot of characters, and they have complex dynamics. An engaging read, but very heavy and quite drawn out. Coming back to it!

  • Like Catcher in the Rye, I read the Iliad when I was a teenager and probably need to read it again.

The first of Homer's great epic poems, the Iliad portrays the final days of the Trojan war. The Iliad has stood the test of time and is still one of—if not the—best depictions of ancient warfare. It is an essential precursor to the infamous journey of Odysseus.

  • A must read like the Odyssey. DO NOT see that wretched "Troy" movie.
