  • The Best Reviews: Jasper Fforde, The Eyre Affair

"A must read. This is an original!" In 1985 time travel and cloning are a consistent part of life. In Britain, English literature has become so in vogue, original manuscripts are quite valuable. Just ask any of the zillion Williams, Charles, or Milto ... (read full critics)

  • The Eyre Affair

Some books come out of left field, some books from an alternate universe. It's not as unusual as you might think. Since the dawn of Science Fiction (Ward Moore's 'Bring the Jubilee' in 1953), "alternate histories" have been a popular subgenre of Scie ... (read full critics)

What Douglas Adams did for Sci-fi and Terry Pratchett does for fantasy, Jasper Fforde does for the thriller mystery genre. Set in an alternate world where literature is taken much more seriously than our own, The Eyre Affair follows the exploits of Thursday Next, a LiteraTech operative. It's filled with action, references to classic literature, and a sense of whimsy that just makes the book (and the series) fun to read.

    Completely deranged!

A compelling parallel reality, constantly surprising and definitely comical, totally witty, with interesting consistent characters, from the super-evil Acheron Hades to the unusually sweet Rochester to the small officers, each with his distinctive fascinating features. Worth reading!!!

Quite an interesting book. The end was a bit of a patch indeed, I didn't like the "deus ex machina" sort-of trick. However, the writing is excellent.

  • This book would not be bad.. the problem is that the various parts seem not to have any connection with each other. The writing just does not flow. Good original ideas, but they are developed in a boring fashion!!

  • Fun and literary

Just started this book - my first Jasper Fforde. Seems fun so far - not unlike Colfer's Artemis Fowl series with a smattering of Dr Who. Full review to follow :)

REVIEW: Well, I enjoyed this book. Good fun, creative ideas, intriguing plot (where else could Bronte's Jane Eyre be brought into our world to have a cup of tea?). A great holiday read, and makes me want to read other books in the Fforde canon. And it is REALLY very similar to Dr Who :) Not a bad thing of course!

  • Ach, I really did not want to get caught in one more saga; I knew I would like Fforde - and I do. A very weird story, people jumping in and out of books - and all of this in a book. I will read the following novels.
