The Magician's Nephew *****
I mean.. WOW!
I was glued to the pages from the beginning to the end of the book! I must admitt that C.S. Lewis really knew how to drag the reader into the story.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe *****
I must admit... I did not even think that the book must be 200 times better than the movie but... IT IS!!!!

Childhood is calling!

I remember reading these books as a child on cold days with a fire blazing and a cup of tea by my side. My favorite has to be The Silver Chair. I related so strongly to Jill Pole that it seemed strange sometimes. She would say exactly what I was thinking. I still watch the 1980s BBC verions even tho ... (continue)

I remember reading these books as a child on cold days with a fire blazing and a cup of tea by my side. My favorite has to be The Silver Chair. I related so strongly to Jill Pole that it seemed strange sometimes. She would say exactly what I was thinking. I still watch the 1980s BBC verions even though the special effects are dated. These stories must have been thrilling to listen to on BBC radio during WWII.

Re-Read

Beautiful stories that above all, deepen our love for Jesus Christ. The stories highlight the wonderful way God makes no excuse for our sin, but graciously forgives and shapes us into His likeness. A fun read that stirs the imagination and spirit.

Like with “His Dark Materials” I decided to read this book (or better these books) after watching the first film. And as it happened with Pullman's books, I also found that Lewis's are utterly astonishing and far far better than the film versions (though I felt liking The Chronicles of Narnia film better than The Golden Compass while contrariwise I really love the book His Dark Materials and quite like The Chronicles). The Chronicles of Narnia are not merely about the Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy. They're about Narnia. You can read about Narnia's creation, the tales of the first Kings and Queens. The adventures of Princes and Princesses of neighbouring countries. And much more! It's Narnia coming to an end, but I won't say anything more out of fear of spoiling the story for anyone, who will be reading it!
I don't know if it is me but there are quite many hints at religion in these books, which I honestly find a bit irritating. It's not realizing religion to be involved that irritates me but more the fact that it seems (throughout most of the story) to take a large “educating” role and I could somehow feel a veiled attack or better a hidden judgement over other “religions”.
While Pullman is a declared atheist and his is an criticism of our religion, he never hides his purpose, on the contrary. So I find his work more “sincere” in that aspect.
But I don't think “religion” is important when reading a fantasy book and I expect fantasy readers will find this a beautiful story.
I read it as a single big book, but I guess that reading each chronicle separately would also be fascinating and maybe “physically” lighter! Anyway. I don't know if you knew that Lewis was a good friend of Tolkien, the genius writer of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and together they were part of the Inklings, an informal writers' club. So, if you're into fantasy, don't miss it!
