《飞狐外传》是《雪山飞狐》的“前传”，叙述胡斐过去的事迹。然而这是两部小说，互相有联系，却并不是全然的统一。在《飞狐外传》中，胡斐不止一次和苗人风相会，胡斐有过别的意中人。这些情节，没有在修改《雪山飞狐》时强求协调。 这部小说的文字风格，比较远离中国旧小说的传统，现在并没有改回来，但有两种情形是改了的：第一，对话中删除了含有现代气息的字眼和观念，人物的内心语言也是如此。第二，改写了太新文艺腔的、类似外国语文法的句子。
《雪山飞狐》的真正主角，其实是胡一刀。胡斐的性格在《雪山飞狐》中十分单薄，到了本书中才渐渐成形。金庸企图在本书中写一个急人之难、行侠仗义的侠土。武侠小说中真正写侠士的其实并不很多，大多数主角的所作所为，主要是武而不是侠。 孟子说：“富贵不能淫，贫贱不能移，威武不能屈，此之谓大丈夫。”
