One Celtic folk legend of the time recounts the tale of a cat and kittens born in the stable at the same time as Jesus. Then a small grey tabby kitten climbed into the manger and curled up beside the infant Jesus, upon which the child fell asleep, lulled by the kitten's gentle purring. It is said the Madonna rewarded the tabby kitten by ensuring all tabby kittens would wear the letter 'M' on their foreheads thereafter.
