A fascinating look at the history of cats through legend and literature.

This is a history of the cat, beginning in ancient times when it was revered as a goddess, and following it as it emerges as enigma, playmate, and companion. The story ranges from the great cats of the Egyptian Mau, and the enchanted cats of Irish legend, to witches' cats, like Graymalkin. Here are tales of the cat who voluntarily shared the Earl of Southampton's captivity in the Tower of London and the cat who licked the tears from Florence Nightingale's cheeks. There are also stories of great and famous cat lovers through history and literature, such as Sir Walter Scott, whose own constant companion awaited a snap of the fingers to rise and lay his head on his master's knee. A Curious History of Cats is illustrated throughout with noteworthy and intriguing feline images through the centuries.

One Celtic folk legend of the time recounts the tale of a cat and kittens born in the stable at the same time as Jesus. Mary asked all the animals for their help to put the baby Jesus to sleep but none could oblige. Then a small grey tabby kitten climbed into the manger and curled up beside the infant Jesus, upon which the child fell asleep, lulled by the kitten's gentle purring. It is said the Madonna rewarded the tabby kitten by ensuring all tabby kittens would wear the letter 'M' on their foreheads thereafter.

Strays were fed in a daily ritual in the central parts of the city by the women of Venice who became know as "mama gati" or "mama cats." Since the eighteenth century the mama gati have been know to prepare the inimitable Cat Spaghetti was covered in a delicious sauce of mussels, garlic, dry white wine, tomato sauce, parsley and olive oil. Unsurprisingly, it was not only the cats who benefited from the pasta feasts. Humans also found it an irresistible recipe.
