Book Description
Richard Dawkins is one of the finest minds in science, and in this superb collection of essays and letters, he demonstrates the depth of his knowledge and the rich variety of his interests. Whether he is examining postmodernism or the Human Genome Project, penning a letter to his daughter, or writing a moving eulogy to Douglas Adams and e-mailing Stephen Jay Gould, Dawkins writes with an intellectual vigour and grace that is second to none. This is a very human collection that shows not only the acuity of Dawkins' scientific mind, but also his sense of humour and the warmth of his relationships with friends and family.

Richard Dawkins's essays are an enthusiastic testament to the power of rigorous, scientific examination, and they span many different corners of his personal and professional life. He revisits the meme, the unit of cultural information that he named and wrote about in his groundbreaking work The Selfish Gene. He makes moving tributes to friends and colleagues, including a eulogy for novelist Douglas Adams; he shares correspondence with the evolutionary biologist Stephen Jay Gould; and he visits with the famed paleoanthropologists Richard and Maeve Leakey at their African wildlife preserve. He concludes the essays with a vivid note to his ten-year-old daughter, reminding her to remain curious, to ask questions, and to live the examined life.

“Nature is neither kind nor cruel but indifferent.”

    To quote a few words:

    On evolution:
“If there is mercy in nature, it is accidental.”
“Nature is neither kind nor cruel but indifferent.”

    On religion:
“There may be some deep question about the cosmos that are forever beyond science. The mistake is to think that they are therefore not beyond religion too.”
“Religion is the most inflammatory enemy-labeling device in history.”

If you choose to read ONE book from Dawkins, pick “The Selfish Gene”, this one is a follow-up of the classic.
