It begins with absence and desire. It begins with blood and fear. It begins with a discovery of witches. When historian Diana Bishop opens an alchemical manuscript in the Bodleian Library, it's an unwelcome intrusion of magic into her carefully ordered life. Though Diana is a witch of impeccable lineage, the violent death of her parents while she was still a child convinced her that human fear is more potent than any witchcraft. Now Diana has unwittingly exposed herself to a world she's kept at bay for years; one of powerful witches, creative, destructive daemons and long-lived vampires. Sensing the significance of Diana's discovery, the creatures gather in Oxford, among them the enigmatic Matthew Clairmont, a vampire genticist. Diana is inexplicably drawn to Matthew and, in a shadowy world of half-truths and old enmities, ties herself to him without fully understanding the ancient line they are crossing. As they begin to unlock the secrets of the manuscript and their feelings for each other deepen, so the fragile balance of peace unravels.

  • Book Review: A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness Share

I don’t know when vampires moved from genre reading (Anne Rice’s series of books and the Brad Pitt/Tom Cruise film Interview with a Vampire marked a starting point of sorts) into the mainstream. Perhaps Joss Whedon’s TV show Buffy The Vampire Slayer, ... (read full critics)

This book is so slow and wordy. The story is ok but it's been done to death. Maybe this author figured since she couldn't be the first, she would use the most words. I don't think I'll bother reading the second one.

The setup for this book is quite elaborate, and a lot attention is paid to the fact that a vampire is /old/ (and has a past) as well as to history in itself. The only thing I didn't like was that for me the setup is perhaps a bit /too/ elaborate... The story is a bit slwo at times, and I didn't know this was a triology before I started reading and now I have to wait ages to know how it continues! <.<

  • A Discovery Of Witches

The beginning held my attention, as if it promised a really good adventure; mid way through, it got slow and tedious, almost like the story went in a circle; and the end was a head scratcher. Perhaps, the short comings of this book will be better understood on the next installment...

  • Fantastic! It is a long book but I loved the rich detailed descriptions of places and characters. Not a typical vampire book but with a much more interesting twist.
I really loved the story and just can't wait for the second in the trilogy!
