I refer you to the review title. I chose this book among many other topics for a University dissertation, and unlike many compulsory readings, this one was a true pleasure to discover.
We read a lot or we read not much, but we usually don't stop to think about the whole process, or what it means, or has meant through history. With a smooth and elegant narrative, Manguel analyses from what must have been the beginning of it all, what legacy we have, to how the presence or absence of a book in someone hands (his particular example was an old woman in bed) can altere our whole concept of this person.
Definitely worth your time and money.
