The first generation were "cattle catchers" during the American Civil War when Florida was largely a roadless wilderness and great herds of cattle were driven from the prairies around Kissimmee to port cities. The story ends with a family member's role in the feverish real estate development along the lower Atlantic coast in the 1920s.
