All the other girls at Miss Minchin's school treat Sara as if she truly were a princess. But when Captain Crewe's fortune is sadly lost, Sara's luck changes. Suddenly she is treated no better than a scullery maid. Her own fierce determination to maintain her dignity and remain a princess inside has intrigued and delighted readers for almost a hundred years, even inspiring a recent popular feature film.

  One of those books that teaches young girls the pleasure of reading.
  Gripping from the very beginning, I was absorbed in the disadventures of the young gold-hearted girl who brightnes up the exsistence of her friends by telling marvelous histories, then live the greatest of them herself.
  To be re-read in the most sad moments of life, to remind me that even in darkest time one should always find the strenght to go on.

  Probabilmente paragonato alle storie della Burnett e del suo tempo, non risulterà molto originale, ma era la mia favola preferita quand’ero piccola e ci sono molto legata.   Probabilmente paragonato alle storie della Burnett e del suo tempo, non risulterà molto originale, ma era la mia favola preferita quand’ero piccola e ci sono molto legata. Mi ha insegnato a sognare e a credere nei miei sogni. E anche quando non vedo possibilità di realizzarli, il solo saper sognare mi solleva il morale. Mi ha insegnato che l’immaginazione è molto importante nella mia vita, perché è qualcosa a cui posso sempre ricorrere e qualcosa che nessuno mi può togliere.

  “Of course the greatest power Sara possessed, and the one which gained her even more followers than her luxuries and the fact that she was ‘the show pupil’, the power that Lavinia and certain other girls were most envious of, and at the same time most fashinated by in spite of themselves, was her power of telling stories and of making everything she talked about seem like a story, whether it was one or not.”

  “You are always supposing things” said Lavinia, and her air was very superior.
  “I know I am” said Sara undisturbedly. “I like it. There is nothing so nice as supposing. It’s amost like being a fairy. If you suppose anything hard enough it seems as if it were real.”
  “It’s all very well to suppose things if you have everything” said Lavinia. “Could you suppose and pretend if you were a beggar and lived in a garret?”.
  Sara stopped arranging the Last Doll’s ostrich plumes, and look thoughtfull.
  “I believe I could” she said. “If one was a beggar, one would have to suppose and pretend all the time. But it mightn’t be easy”.

But Sara has a loving heart and a quick imagination, and she knows that with the right spirit, she can remain a princess inside.

  Sara歷經人生的轉折，由富而貧。Sara是個勇敢堅毅又善良的女孩，她常能正面思考，例如她對於她自己的期勉：
  Whatever comes cannot alter one thing. If I am a princess in rags and tatters, I can be a princess inside. It would be easy to be princess if I were dressed in cloth of gold, but it is a great deal more of a triumph to be one all the time when no one knows it.
  書中最感人的一段是Sara撿到fourpence，用這零錢她得到六個buns，極度飢餓的她，卻在瞧見了一個乞丐小女孩，她的良善讓她忘記自己的飢餓，將五個buns給了那個女孩。Sara這麼想：

  She is hungrier than I am. She's starving.
  書中的結尾，Sara又擁有了財富，但是她高貴的情操和善良的人將是最為人讚頌。
  這是一本書在困境中保持樂觀，在受不公平待還仍看重自己並對未來充滿希望的書。
