Will the real world is real only because that is the only "reality" that we have experienced? What actually is the difference between these two perception? PKD again explore the concept of reality, and the response of the characters in the book is food for thought.

One of my favorite PKD novel!

This novel was pure brilliance. It is by far my favourite Philip K Dick so far, it is everything that good sci-fi should be. Interesting world, philosophical ideas, psychotic characters and a plot that keeps you guessing. It was a fascinating read, with lots of surprises along the way. It really delved into the dark side of human nature, the ideas of hope and despair and it means to be human.

The only thing that let it down was some of the characterisation seemed a little cliché, Ms. Smart, in particular, but having said that all the characters were totally different and easy to picture and you had a really good sense of who they were, even if who they were was a little one dimensional.

I have to say that the world building was also very good. It came across as a believable galactic civilisation, one with some very interesting religious ideas. The idea of a space faring society where god had been proved to exist I thought was quite interesting. I also liked the strange planet, with its alien devices that were able to replicate life. And of course the fact that even though it was the future when the main character was packing to go to the new colony he brought with him his records and a typewriter!

The writing style I thought was very coherent for Philip K. Dick, the strangeness never got to the incomprehensible level but flowed well with the story (one can only assume that it was short enough to be written before the amphetamine psychosis hit). I enjoyed this a great deal and am looking forward to reading more of his books.
