    Arrivata al terzo volume della saga, è tempo di spendere due parole su G.R.R. Martin.
    Indubbiamente uno scrittore che si fa notare e ti trascina nel Westeros...è uno dei figli di Tolkien per il tipo di immaginario e di ambientazione, ma dal suo padre letterario si distacca per l'asprezza dei suoi libri, in cui i personaggi sono ben lontani dall'epica tolkieniana.
    Ecco, i personaggi...loro sono decisamente il punto di forza di Martin, più dello stile e della storia: la loro profondità, le loro innumerevoli sfaccettature, la loro umana disumanità...li rendono tutti tremendamente avvincenti, anche quelli più odiosi. Come fascino, indubbiamente vince Tyrion, il nano dall'intelligenza acutissima, che è molto meno mostro di tanti personaggi, anche insospettabili.
    Arrivata al terzo libro, però, spendo anche delle critiche: ormai ho capito l'antifona...i libri di Martin sono tutti volumoni (e questo non sarebbe un problema) in cui per circa i due terzi succede poco o nulla di davvero rilevante e nell'ultimo terzo scoppia una vera e propria tempesta di eventi stupefacenti (che ti costringono inevitabilmente a comprare il seguito...).
    Ok, diciamolo...Martin è un po' prolisso...forse anche questo è un'eredità tolkieniana, ma Tolkien poteva permetterselo e le sue descrizioni incantavano e lasciavano un'aura magica. Martin spesso si perde in dettagli un po' futili che, se a volte ci stanno, altre sembrano messi lì a gonfiare il numero di pagine.
    Ecco perché non ha avuto il massimo delle stelline questo terzo volume: il finale l'avrebbe meritato (anche se mi resta la domanda inquietante del "dove vuole andare a parare?"), ma per arrivare all'ultimo terzo stavolta ho faticato più del previsto.
    In ogni caso, non credo che resisterò alla tentazione di comprare il quarto volume a breve...ormai ho iniziato il mio viaggio nei Sette Regni (e oltre) e non posso fermarmi.

  • So far, my favourite of the saga.
    Extremely rich both in plot and surprises, I grieved and angered with some of the characters, cheered and hoped with some others.
    A great work from Master Martin.

    I hope that Dance will stop adding to the list of people we don't really need to know about, but I know it's just wishful thinking.
    What baffles me is that he's got a core of interesting and strong characters everyone would love to read more about, so why waste pages and effort on utterly irrelevant stuff?

The introduction of Jaime's PoV chapters was the greatest surprise of this book, the development of Sansa's story arc was delightful and all the unexpected turning points were utterly captivating. The definition of allies and enemies is of no simple choice throughout the story, that's what makes it so interesting and truer than having all bad/all good characters struggling along.

    More cruelty, more treachery, more plots... Maybe a little too much of them: what was realistic in the first volume now has turned a little grotesque.
    Some characters that at first seemed really alive have now crystallized in their role, losing a lot of their appeal.
    All the gratuitous cruelty and innumerable plot twists will leave you dizzy: it's like the author's trying (too hard) to surprise the reader as much as he can, and the "credibility" of the story suffers a little from this.
    Nevertheless, this novel will hypnotize you, forcing you to turn page after page after page, and when it's finally over you'll only be able to whisper "wow!"...
