I cant say I didnt like, as I still gave it three stars after all, but.. There are a few 'buts' actually. Hosseini certainly knows how to write a good story, how to drag you in it, and at the same time, giving out emotions, love, fear, hate, uncertainty. The problem was Afghanistan. That is, I felt ... That is, I felt I was reading the next chapter of the Kite Runner. Same place (Afghanistan), same war (Taliban), same problems (honour, lies, running away). I could go on and on frankly. My problem is, can Hosseini write about anything else, happening somewhere else? If not, I cant help thinking that his imagination is somewhat lacking or he is too afraid of writing about something he doesnt know too well. Either way, if he comes out with another book set in Afghanistan, I, for one, wont be buying it. Ive read it all before, twice!
Continue

It's more real than "Kite Runner"

A very moving story of two fifteen year old girls in Afghanistan. The story starts with 15 year old Miriam then, when she is in her thirties and married to Rasheed - a cruel, bitter tyrant of a husband - we are introduced to 15 year old Laila, who becomes Rasheed's second wife. The two wives suffer untold brutality from Rasheed and although at first there is animosity between them their common suffering at his hands draws them together. This is a time of growing tension in the country, the Soviets are pulling out, and the tribes who had fought as one against them start fighting among them selves. Eventually the Taliban take control. Although there is death all around them in Kabul, Rasheed's brutality in no way decreases. The wives are drawn very close. Their strength, in the midst of untold brutality, is drawn from their love for one another, and their love for Laila's child. The story is heartbreaking because the suffering of these women is real: it really happens in our world today - and not only in Afghanistan!
In one sense the story has a happy ending - but that happiness is bought at great cost. A wonderful story!
I loved this book just as much as "The Kite Runner"
