  • A Tiny Bit Marvellous by Dawn French

Over the years I have become something of a Dawn French fan. She has consistently entertained and quite frankly made my sides split with laughter as an actor, comedian, and most recently as a writer with her wonderful autobiography Dear Fatty. So whe ... (read full critics)

  • BOOKENDS: A Tiny bit Marvellous

Criticising Dawn French feels like kicking a puppy. She’s so winning that the nation was even tempted to let The Vicar of Dibley slide. The same is true of her debut novel, A Tiny Bit Marvellous (Michael Joseph, £18.99), which has its heart in the ri ... (read full critics)

    A funny summer reading

Nice, funny reading. All characters but Mo are a little bizzarre - if not grotesque, especially Oscar. Maybe Dora is too much of a weirdo (I mean, who in the world would attack his/her mother that way at all time? Have a break!)

I didn't expect a masterpiece, but I was pleasantly surprised by the fresh style of this book and by its peculiarity.

I was expecting something more from Dawn French. I was in fact quite disappointed by this book, which was supposed to be a funny novel: in fact, it was just funny. The structure of the novel was virtually non existent, the plot was extremely cliched and slow, and nothing really happens throughout the book - except for a (foreseeable) turn of events at the very end). The characters are often exaggerated and stereotyped, and a bunch of - however good - jokes and funny expressions can't make up for the lack of shape and verisimilitude.

It's a quick and relaxing reading, but all in all, I could have done without.

I really loved this book and am
now lucky enough to have a signed copy of it on my bookshelf! Considering it was her first novel, I think Dawn did really well at keeping the plot tight and the story moving whilst giving you so much to identify with each of the characters. The dialogue was good, the mother daughter relationship was totally believable and hilarious to read at times. A light-hearted, easy holiday read. You just can't fail to love it.
