    What I liked most in this novel is how it describes the evolution of the protagonist from a man of pure action - so straightforward in everything that he verges on naive - to someone capable of fine abstract thinking. Eventually I realized it might be also an allegory of the transition from silver and gold to papermoney, a core topic of this book.

    Next best thing, for once a writer gives a sensible, plausible reason for a woman to turn down the proposal of a man she fancies!
