    I picked this up hoping to learn something about the people and culture(s) so frequently in the news for the past few years. Another reviewer notes that the first portion of the book is more of a history of Islam - I agree, but came away with not-so-new notion that the Arab culture is heavily intertwined with Islam. That said, I invested a lot of time reading this work, but really didn't feel that I was any smarter about the subject than I was 600+ pages earlier.
