Paul Baumer enlisted with his classmates in the German army of World War I. Youthful, enthusiastic, they become soldiers. But despite what they have learned, they break into pieces under the first bombardment in the trenches. And as horrible war plods on year after year, Paul holds fast to a single vow: to fight against the principles of hate that meaninglessly pits young men of the same generation but different uniforms against each other--if only he can come out of the war alive.
"The world has a great writer in Erich Maria Remarque. He is a craftsman of unquestionably first trank, a man who can bend language to his will. Whether he writes of men or of inanimate nature, his touch is sensitive, firm, and sure."

  • 'All Quiet on the Western Front' by Erich Maria Remarque

Told through the eyes of 19-year-old soldier Paul Baumer, it details his experiences fighting in the Flanders' trenches. Over time Baumer undergoes a complete transformation from naive young schoolboy to hard-bitten soldier. He survives the harsh rea ... (read full critics)

A searing first-person account of the First World War, All Quiet on the Western Front describes one German soldier's experiences and the fate of the school companions who joined up with him. There is no belaboring of the horrors of war, just a simple ... (read full critics)

I read this book in highschool and re-read it this summer. It is one long shriek of rage and horror. You need a strong stomach for the descriptions of trench life and warfare. Then again, you need a strong stomach for war.

Well-written - and an up-to-date, excellent translation. I suspect a realistic - and often graphic depiction of the life of a First World War soldier. My favourite bit, Paul being caught in no man's land on a reconnaissance mission and having to play dead in a crater whilst an enemy attack goes on all around him - and as the attack is beaten back, how an unsuspecting French soldier stumbles over him and is dealt a fatal wound by Paul, who - still cut off from his own trench - is trapped in the shell hole with the dying Frenchman and becoming tormented by guilt, he administer's first aid and starts to make promises to the dying man, who can't move or speak... it's powerful stuff. In some way, I am glad I've finished it, glad that it is over. But also, I am glad I've read it too.
