A missing little girl named Maggie Rose. A family of three brutally murdered in the projects of Washington, D.C. The thrill-killing of a beautiful elementary school teacher. A psychopathic serial kidnapper/murderer who calls himself the Son of Lindbergh. He is so terrifying that the FBI, the Secret Service, and the police cannot outsmart him-even after he's been captured.

Gary Soneji is a mild-mannered mathematics teacher at a Washington, D.C., private school for the children of the political and social elite. He's so popular that the kids all call him "Mr. Chips." And he's very, very smart. Growing up, he always knew he was smarter than the rest of them-he knew that the Great Ones always fooled everybody. He kidnaps Maggie Rose, the golden-haired daughter of a famous movie actress, and her best friend, Shrimpie Goldberg, the son of the secretary of the treasury, right out from under the noses of their two Secret Service agents. But Gary Soneji is not surprised at his skill. He's done it before. Hundreds of times before.

Alex Cross must face the ultimate test as a psychologist: how do you outmaneuver a brilliant psychopath? Especially one who appears to have a split personality-one who won't let the other half remember those horrific acts?

Soneji has outsmarted the FBI, the Secret Service, and the police. Who will be his next victim?

This pleasantly surprised me as being even better than I was expecting. I think this was Patterson's first bestseller and you can see why. It may still be one of his best written books to date. This book introduce's Alex Cross who I have in my head as Morgan Freeman because of the film version and really I think even if he hadn't played him that's who I would have envisioned as him. He's an amazing character and you just love him.

Gary Soneji is a scary, scary man and as far as I can remember it's not the last we see of him. I think I may have read Roses are Red somewhere down the line. A brilliant book, excellent storyline, engaging characters and a terrifying bad guy!

  • Pretty decent book. I wasn't crazy about the characters so it took me a bit to get into it but the storyline was pretty interesting at least.

  • 1st book of James Patterson I ever read

and I LOVED it. I was hooked on him from this book on. I would see his books and I would find the money somewhere to buy his lastest book. I wish I could remember the year I read it but I think it was just newly published.

  • Some sections were pretty disturbing. Started to enjoy more in later sections when characters started to develop more. Writer used a number of "tricks" to maintain interest. Was generally engaging enough to want me to read the next in the series, but nothing extraordinary about it.

  • I have been meaning to read this novel for quite some time, however, hadn't gotten around to it until now. I enjoy Patterson's style of writing. It isn't too descriptive, yet you are able to draw conclusions and make assumptions.
