  Surely one of the greatest soldiers of all time. A man of outstanding personal courage he inspired others. But he didn't believe in the useless waste of life caused by frontal assaults. We see his brilliance - his attempt at the seemingly impossible - and his saving of thousands of lives by his strategy against the Japanese as he fought them from island to island.

  MacArthur predicted that the American policy in Viet Nam would fail - as it had in Korea - but the Americans didn't learn the lesson.

  MacArthur undoubtedly had faults but Truman treated him shabbily. The nation obviously thought so too for their welcome of 2,895 tons of ticker-tape was four times the record.
