"Ten thousand a year and a large estate in Derbyshire!" That was all Mrs. Bennet desired to know of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy before she began to entertain hopes that one of her daughters would attract his attention. In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen reveals little of her creation's past or present before banishing him for quite two thirds of her book. But, who is Fitzwilliam Darcy?

An Assembly Such as This, the first book of the Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman trilogy, answers that intriguing question by taking the reader into Darcy's world, a world very different from Elizabeth Bennet's. Chronicling Darcy's supervision of his naive friend Charles Bingley and his growing fascination with Elizabeth Bennet, it culminates with the disastrous ball at Netherfield and Darcy's return to London with the express intention of forgetting Elizabeth amidst the dizzying and dangerous whirl of Regency society.

    Skip this one, P&P fans.

This book purports to tell the Pride & Prejudice story from Darcy's perspective, but not only does it lack the Austen style and feel, it's also boring.

If in "Pride & Prejudice" you are hungry for more pages about Darcy, here you are hungry for details about Lizzy to the point that all the details you received now about Darcy are not enough to compensate Lizzy's absence.

It's an error to begin to read the book thinking in "Pride and Prejudice" and what you know about this book, because then you expect to find something similar but more well-balanced in presence of main characters, which is not the case. "An Assembly such as this" is a book about Darcy, only, and as such, it has to be read or you will not enjoy the book at all... Before beginning to read you have to be free of all kind of expectations related to the original work.

The style is quite pompous, but at the same time simple, it sounds like a contradiction but it is that way. It's not Jane Austen, but it's a very well written and developed fanfic :) Sometimes I had the impression that it was too precise and tedious, but it can be very well derived from my expectations. And I had problems to understand some moments and passages, but they were not very crucial at the end to understand the whole book.

What I don't exactly get about these books is: why a trilogy? why cannot the author tell the story in so many pages or some more than the original work? why so many insignificant details? that Jane Austen left very much to the imagination regarding Mr. Darcy doesn't mean everything has to be written now... I loved to read about his weakness and his passionate love for Elizabeth, but using half of the pages would have worked too ¬¬

Anyway, if you are not a great enthusiast of Mr. Darcy and/or you don't have much time or patience, refrain from reading this book, really. It will probably bore you to death.

At the end I give four stars. The book is good written and Mr. Darcy's weakness for Elizabeth's eyes is lovely *__*
