The Kmer civilization centred on Angkor was one of the most remarkable to flourish in Southeast Asia. Between the 8th and the 13th centuries, a succession of Hindu and Buddhist kings created magnificent temples in stone. Their elaborate carvings and intricate architecture amazed the first Europeans who visited in the 19th century and continue to fascinate today, when after many years of political turmoil, Angkor is once again accessible.
The renowned French scholar, Claude Jacques, has studied Angkor and its history for the past 30 years, while Michael Freeman has made many photographic trips there during a 15 years period. Ancient Angkor embodies the fruits of their collaboration and includes the results of new research and discoveries made during recent excavations.
Detailed plans and descriptions unravel the complex reliefs of Angkor Wat and the Bayon, while small but interesting temples not covered in other books are also described. Grouping the temple into easy-to-visit itineraries, and with useful hotel and travel information. Ancient Angkor will serve both as a history of the temples in its own right and an invaluable companion guide.

I find this book helpful in two ways. First, it gives detailed description even in small, minor temples. Second, it has plenty of high quality photos taken at best moments, which most visitors are unable to do except in the major temples.

However having a guide does not mean everything. One should still spend sometime to have himself submerged in the atmosphere of the temples. In other words, I suggest staying at Angkor for several days such that you can get plenty of time to understand the place in both informational and emotional way.

When I cycling in Angkor, this book did save me from getting lost. So it is PRACTICAL.

But I am not really patient observer, so could not find all the sculptures it has mentioned in Angkorian building. The temple layouts are neat and its suggested visit itinerary is okay, however disappointingly, it did not offer enough information in regards to the sculpture and the mythology and the importance of them. So even if you can find the sculptures, still you cannot fully appreciate the complexity of Angkor Wat.

But as if you wanna save a penny from hiring a guide, this book does the trick.
