Detective Hieryonymus 'Harry' Bosch finds himself yet again in charge of a case that no one else will touch. This time his job is to nail the killer of hot shot black lawyer Howard Elias. Elias has been found murdered on the eve of going to court on behalf of Michael Harris: a man the LAPD believes guilty of the rape and murder of a 12 year old girl. Elias had let it be known that the aim of his civil case was not only to reveal the real kiler but to target and bring down the racist cops who beat up his client during a violent interrogation. Bosch is going to have to take a long hard look at some of his colleagues in a post-Rodney King Los Angeles Police Department that is rife with suspicion and racial hatred.

Another outing for Connelly's popular detective Harry Bosch. This crime has political consequences therefore Bosch has a short time-scale and is given a tight rein by Deputy Chief Inspector Irving. The death of a famous black lawyer who concentrates his work on prosecuting cops guilty of racism and brutality. Bosch asks for help but is given a team from IAD headed by his nemesis Chastain and later, a team from the FBI are brought in to add weight to the investigation.
Bosch as usual, has a troubled private life and is not happy with the outcome of the investigation as the Chief is dumbing down the truth to save the faces of high profile citizens. Harry digs further until he finds the truth and may now find his career jeopardised due to his findings. If you like Michael Connelly's famous detective then you will like this story too.

It may well be part of the American culture of which he is writing but here is one English reader who finds it totally unpalatable
