The novella is about animals on a farm that free themselves from their human masters. At first they work hard, have equality and are happy. Soon, different classes form (pigs, dogs, the rest) and the farm takes on a communist flavour. From here on, Orwell takes the reader on a complete transition of the farm from freedom to communism to communist-dictatorship. Since Orwell is using animals (instead of humans) he can create classes and gets away with some brilliant analogies. The book is tiny and takes only a few hours. Must read.

    • My Thoughts
    • Quite a good read, especially those interested in politics. It's an easier read for children, some children may even read it and enjoy it, perhaps not understand it's symbolic meaning, but still enjoy it's bluntly truthful fair tale. Everyone should read the novel!

This was on the BBC 100 Best Loved Books List (The Big Read) as was the other Orwell Classic, 1984. I read 1984 first and thought it was poetic and clever, but rather over-rated. Based on that experience, I wasn't sure I wanted to read Animal Farm, but I'm glad I did. It's a good allegorical story. It is less linguistically rich than 1984, but much more accessible - it feels like it was written with a younger audience in mind. I can imagine I would have enjoyed this had I read it at around 14-16 and would recommend it to people in this age group or maybe even slightly younger especially if they are interested in history or politics etc.
