  A historical novel with emphasis on the history, this was an interesting and informative read. It follows the lives of the four Lennox sisters and their extended families through the 18th to the 19th century. Their correspondence forms the basis for the novel aspect, as the author carefully rounds out the personalities of the characters using what is written in the letters, and what is said between the lines. It is an interesting look at social history in that period, and it is the best kind of historical novel as it doesn't take too many liberties with fact. It's also very informative on a variety of different topics such as politics, philosophy, literature, art and architecture.
  It's not a book that has to be read diligently, as you can put it down and pick it up when you feel like it without losing the plot.
