Scritto nel 1826, "Armance" è il primo romanzo di Stendhal e s'ispira alprecedente "Olivier ou le secret" di Madame Duras: precedente illustre, vistoche l'argomento scabroso che affrontava più o meno celatamente (l'impotenzasessuale) gli diede una risonanza che i soli meriti stilistici forse non gliavrebbero procurato. Stendhal riprende quel tema, appassionandosi alla sfidaletteraria che esso pone: scrivere un racconto, inattaccabile sul piano logicoe strutturale, incentrato su un argomento che all'epoca non poteva che essereaccennato, mai reso esplicito.
