Su Asimov si scrivono ormai delle tesi di laurea, ed è forse per facilitare il lavoro degli eruditi che il celebre autore ha raccolto e ordinato in volume i suoi racconti più antichi e meno noti, divenuti in massima parte introvabili anche nell'originale. Chiunque altro ci avrebbe fatto la figura del vanitoso, se non del megalomane. Ma Asimov è anzitutto un uomo di grande spirito: ogni racconto è commentato e criticato con una specie di paterna, ironica indulgenza, e questa serie di interventi personali finisce per formare per conto suo una saporitissima autobiografia letteraria. Tra la story personale e le 27 storie introvabili, il volume viene dunque a collocarsi da sé nello scaffale delle opere rigorosamente d'obbligo per ogni appassionato di fantascienza.
