Don't be confused by the three-star rating, Lovecraft is indeed a literary genius. However, he gave his best in his short stories. And this first volume (of three) of his collected works includes his three novellas: "At the Mountains of Madness", laborious but at the end enjoyable; "The Strange Case of Charles Dexter Ward", in my opinion the best of the three but still far too stretched, and "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath", that seems little more than an exercise of style, long-winded and full of details that have no reason to be in the story. The shorter works here included are good, although not the best, and "The Statement of Randolph Carter" is a ten-page masterwork.
