The subtitle -Great Sea Battles, Heroic Discoveries, Titanic Storms, and a Vast Ocean of a Million Stories- says it all. Simon Winchester sets a very ambitious goal for himself and achieves that goal for us, his readers, with admirable skill. The geographic span of his work is obvious and the temporal span breathtaking, starting in Cambrian times, some 540 million years ago to an inevitable end propelled by plate tectonics 170 million years from now. He examines this vast realm from perspectives ranging from the abyss to that of pilots eight miles above the surface. He delivers concise and insightful glimpses of the human history and physical forces that shape our experience of the Atlantic.

The power, grace and subtlety of Winchester's writing is delightful. For those of us who thrill to English prose polished for the eye, the ear and the mind, his work is exemplary.

If you could read only one book on the subject, this would be it.
