When shy young heir Patrick is orphaned at the age of ten, the only family he has is his wealthy and eccentric aunt, a New York socialite named Mame. Prone to dramatic costumes, flights of fancy and expensive whims, Mame will raise Patrick the only way she knows how - with humour, mishaps, unforgettable friends and lots of love. From progressive schooling and Mame's search for a husband to her short-lived literary career and the puncturing of some of Patrick's romances, Auntie Mame is the most magnificent and hilarious work of love, style, wit and the life of a modern American.

All you need to know about this book is: it must be read. The best descriptions I could think of are those that frame this edition of the book, by Rudnick and the son of the Author.. and since I read them just now, I'd be only quoting them, and since I just finished such a witty, sparkling prose , I'd feel quite dull if I did so.
When I finally let this book take its toll on me, and started reding it compulsively as it demands and deserves, I could hardly drop it. Instead in the last couple of days I dropped (in order) studying, internet and all its devilish temptations and everyday life in order to finish it.
I even felt so nostalgic at the vey end, cause all the gorgeous wonderland of Auntie Mame would soon be over...

Then I remembered there's a sequel, and that the Author wrote other 15 novels... but mostly, I know now that I'll hardly ever be parted from Auntie Mame: she won't let me forget her.

A greatly enjoyable and captivating reading!
Auntie Mame is such a brilliant and sophisticated Lady and such a sweet and loving aunt (but nothing conventional, be careful!) that nobody will resist her!
Set in the '30s and '40s and '50s, it hasn't lost at all its sparkling humour.

  • A funny tale about a boy and his extravagant aunt, in New York between 1929 and the early 50s. I really enjoyed it!
