When Gum embarks upon an expedition of many years, he arranges for money for the family for five years. As the years go by, with no sign of Gum, Sylvia and Nana must take in boarders to help make ends meet. A variety of important figures thus enters the childrens' lives: Mr. Simpson, who runs an auto repair garage; Drs. Jakes and Smith, a pair of professors who take over the children's schooling after they are withdrawn from their private school, and Miss Theo Dane, a dance teacher, who arranges for the children to begin dance and stage training.
The children develop their unique talents, as they grow up, and learn the responsibility of supporting the family. Pauline becomes a sought-after stage and screen actress. Posy is plucked from the beginning dance class to be taught exclusively by the indomitable headmistress of the school, Madame Fidolia, who has great plans for her protegee. Petrova struggles with her duty to help support the household in the only way she's capable of as a child, but keeps alive her dream of flying aeroplanes one day. All three sisters are inspired and kept up by their repeated vow to "get our names in the history books, because it's our own, and nobody can say it's because of our grandfathers."
