  I have read this (and the manga version) about three or four years ago. It is a very Japanese book, in that the story is very character-based. Someday I will compare it to Hunger Games, but in the meantime I can attest that Battle Royale is an engaging, well written illustration of how various young people react when they are really pushed to the wall.

  A fascinating study of psychological variety and the relationship between personal goals and social pressure. Highly recommended.

  Even though the character development and plot twists may appear naive every now and then, this is a solid nippo-pulp that deserve a reading. The tie in movie is worth a watch, too.

  The translation is a little awkward, but it's an interesting story. The book is far better than the manga.
