溫情的兒童小說。內容敘述一個媽媽離家出走，父親(身分是preacher)因此沈溺工作，不常與她互動(I stared at the preacher really hard. Sometimes he reminded me of a turtle hiding inside its shell, in there thinking about things and not ever sticking his head out into the world.)，又因搬家失去朋友，因而自覺寂寞的十歲小女孩。偶然邂逅一條似乎很會交朋友的流浪犬，並因而使她走出寂寞，並在新環境裡迅速擴展人際關係的故事。
書裡使用的英文單字很生活，對我卻相對陌生，例如像這樣的句子：“I don't get a big enough allowance to afford something this fancy. But I love this collar and leash, and so does my dog, and I was thinking that maybe you could set me up on an installment plan.”表示我的英文還得從簡單的學起。
在我看來，小女孩的個人特質使得她的寂寞本就不會長久，這點在書的開頭就透露了。小女孩自述說：I was a good, quiet kid. I was what the Friendly Corners Trailer Park manager, Mr. Alfred, called “an exception.”小女孩本有足夠的能力交新朋友，狗只是加速事情的發生而已。明顯的事實是，如果這條狗真有交友的天賦(小女孩對狗說：“You are better at making friends than anybody I have ever known.”)，牠從前就不會是一條流浪犬了。

Kate DiCamillo has a storyteller's writing style, one in which she is able to describe her characters fully.
You just know this is going to be a tear-jerker . . .
And it was. Holy smokes! I haven't cried like that since I was a boy. Sincerely.
The party of misfits is really touching, but it is Opal's relationships with her dog, her friends, and her father that make this book.
DiCamillo is excellent setting a scene. It isn't that so much occurs in the book, it's that Opal, like her tree, takes root.
I highly recommend this book!

Cherry Jones narrated Because of Winn-Dixie and did a fine job. The story just didn't grab me. I didn't feel like it had a point. The biggest event occured when Opal thought she had lost Winn-Dixie during the thunderstorm only to come and find him back at the house. Maybe it just has been a while since I have read anything at this low of a reading level and it seemed slow going. I read it because I wanted to go see the movie, but now I am fairly certain I can wait to see the movie until it comse out on DVD.
