Informative, engaging and humorously written, Behind the Curtain is a story of "how Eastern Europe has changed since the Berlin Wall came down" -- told through the universal language of football.
With a country-by-country structure, it tells the tale of paradoxical role of football under communism. I personally find the chapters on Hungary's crumbling splendour, Serbia's fiery nationalism, Bosnia's painful memories and Russia's capitalistic resurgence to be particularly strong and affectionate.
Fans of football and/or Eastern Europe will love Jonathan Wilson's funny and warm stories of his trips to Europe. Highly recommended.
