Springtime in Styria. And that means war. There have been nineteen years of blood. The ruthless Grand Duke Orso is locked in a vicious struggle with the squabbling League of Eight, and between them they have bled the land white. While armies march, heads roll and cities burn, behind the scenes bankers, priests and older, darker powers play a deadly game to choose who will be king. War may be hell but for Monza Murcatto, the Snake of Talins, the most feared and famous mercenary in Duke Orso's employ, it's a damn good way of making money too. Her victories have made her popular - a shade too popular for her employer's taste. Betrayed, thrown down a mountain and left for dead, Murcatto's reward is a broken body and a burning hunger for vengeance. Whatever the cost, seven men must die. Her allies include Styria's least reliable drunkard, Styria's most treacherous poisoner, a mass-murderer obsessed with numbers and a Northman who just wants to do the right thing. Her enemies number the better half of the nation. And that's all before the most dangerous man in the world is dispatched to hunt her down and finish the job Duke Orso started...Springtime in Styria. And that means revenge.

Home Contact us Posts Comments Joe Abercrombie describes his work as “unheroic fantasy”, a beautifully turned phrase which it’s hard to better if you need to quickly sum up Best Served Cold. Put simply, there are no gallant, selfless or likeable char ... (read full critics)

  • Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie - Review by Waterstone's Books Quarterly Online

The critically acclaimed First Law trilogy pushed Joe Abercrombie into fantasy’s premiership, and this, a standalone novel set in the same world, is an exciting prospect. The Snake of Talins, Monza Murcatto, is a feared mercenary. Her ruthlessness ha ... (read full critics)

It took me a while to read this book, not just because of the length of the book but because of all the additional things taking place in my life now.

    Anyway...

Joe Albercrombie can definitely write a book, and this book is well written, however, there is one theme and it is vengeance. Every character has some wrong to right, and each seeks revenge of their own kind.

The just of the book is this. A general is betrayed by her Duke. Her brother is killed and she is nearly so, but only left crippled. She returns to seek revenge on the 7 people who had a part in her brother's murder and her demise. She is able to recruit a number of people to her cause.

There are times where I just don't believe her cause is enough to keep a her going, and I got kind of bored with the length of the book, but again that could be that it took me so long to finish it, but in the end the book has a nice plot twist that justify reading it to the end.
