This collection brings together Dahl's finest work, illustrating his genius for the horrific and grotesque which is unparalleled.

"Dahl has the mastery of plot and characters possessed by great writers of the past, along with a wildness and wryness of his own. One of his trademarks is writing beautifully about the ugly, even the horrible."--Los Angeles Times

"An ingenious imagination, a fascination with odd and ordinary detail, and a lust for its thorough exploitation are the...strengths of Dahl's storytelling."--New York Times Book Review

Before I read this book I thought Roald Dahl was only a writer who writes imaginary stories, with happy endings always. However, I was too shocked after I read the first story in the book, the style of writing in his adult stories was totally different, so as the content, full of the things happened in the real world. What's more the scenes are always shocking, and I wonder, what made him change his mind and write those fabulous children's book? I am fascinated in reading it.

  • Superb short story collection - definitely NOT for kids. Dahl let his sardonic ironic imagination roam free. Think O.Henry with a twisted sense of humor. My favorite story is "Lamb to the Slaughter."
