Except for the movie "The French Lieutenant's Woman", this is the first Pinter play I've read. The use of different pairings between three people in expositing the various stages of an affair reminds me of "Closer" (Mike Nichols, Patrick Marber play/screenply); the reverse chronological order reminds me of "5x2" (Francois Ozon movie). I have no idea whether the structure of these two later works are inspired by this play or not; though it's hard to imagine any contemporary English playwright who hasn't read Pinter.
The dynamics and tension would have been stronger had I seen the play in theatre. Still, the lines shot through like bullets, sharp and to the point. And although the play is 30 years old, it is still exceedingly contemporary.
