  • A gripping book on war

I don't really get into book on this subject, but I have read this book twice. There are bit where it is set in the trenches where I felt was down there too!!! Also a good love story too, with an erotic part or two that is exciting and exillrating.

As readers and film lovers we have been inundated with historical fiction set in the second world war, but I (along with many others, I believe) really knew very little about life in the trenches in the first world war. Faulks tale is both harrowing and beautiful, and he sketches a world where the civic perception of war is still from a more gallant era, but where the reality of gas, tunnel explosions and trench warfare has turned the soldiers' experience into the stuff of nightmare.

The book is balanced with a touching love story and the attempts of the main character's granddaughter to discover her grandfather through his dairies.
