  • Blood Bound

Blood Bound Blood Bound is the second book in what could become a great new urban fantasy series starring a tough, non-human heroine. Mercedes Thompson is a VW mechanic, which gets her a lot of jokes. She is a "walker", which is similar to the Skinwa ... (read full critics)

I didn't expect much from this book, and in that I wasn't disappointed. I couldn't bring myself to finish it because the first hundred pages were nothing new. The heroine came across as a bit predictable, it's told in first person but the voice isn't nearly as quirky, strong, or special in any way, as it should be in order to carry the narrative, and I didn’t particularly like the prose style.
I found the "big bad" to be interesting, in that it was a demon-possessed vampire sorcerer, and the horror the protagonist felt in meeting it/him was decently rendered. The rest of the cast, though, was something already seen: possessive and assertive (and hot, my God, don't doubt it for a second) werewolves, and a vampire who is reluctant to drink blood - for whatever reason. Since someone suggested this book to me when I mentioned I was looking for some story where vampires weren't the sissies they all seem to be today, I dropped it. I think they were pulling a prank on me. Heh.
To sum this up – nothing exceptional about it. If you’re looking for a urban fantasy that follows the usual format, this one shouldn’t be a bad choice. If you’re looking for something that goes beyond that... tell me if you find it.

  • Getting Even Better

This book is just as good and in some ways better than the first. You get to know some of the lesser known characters in the first book better, learn a bit more about the supernatural culture, and are taken on an exciting ride. This is a must read for fantasy/sci-fi fans.

  • Second in the series

I think I liked this one a bit more than the first. A few more characters are introduced, though the story still revolves around Mercy. Fast-paced, action-packed, character-driven - good series.
