  Abandoned around page 150 on my first attempt at reading Blood Meridian. No harm done - even Harold Bloom gave up on his first try at page 60.

  It isn't the violence that I find objectionable, but rather the prose. It is well written I suppose, but the unrelenting style makes me zone out after around 10-15 pages of reading. I have also found it difficult to get involved in the plot.

  Mid-nineteenth century deep south dialect coupled with lengthy descriptions (landscapes, weather conditions)proved to difficult for me to feel comfortable with.   OMG: headless bodies, blood flowing like rivers, all kinds of free violence. What I was expecting? It is always the same way with this writer: violence, blood and groseness.

  I saw many critics bid us readers to "persevere" through this book. And then later, when reading this novel, I start to know what "persevere" really means because this is the first novel that makes me feel physically uncomfortable...

  It's such a hard read, but still, it's also a dense and well-written and very sophisticated novel. The reading process is slow, but rewarding (such as the vocabularies I check and learn from it--OK, I know I've forgotten many of them now). The prose style is simply stunning (I think one of the best parts of McCarthy is his descriptive language, especially the description of landscape). Reading it is also more like a test, a test of how many texts I've read (not many) and how familiar (oops) I am with them because once in a while something strange would suddenly pop up. Often, it turns out to be an allusion or even a quote (The Waste Land, for example). That adds the extra fun actually.

  This was an extremely well written book. It is definitely a graphic and violent book. Unlike others i didn't find this to be his best work, but that is probably because i didn't like the topic that much. I thought The Road and No Country For Old Men were better.
