  This is a sort of re-telling of Marquis de Sade's "Justine", but set in America (then the wider world) in the 1970s and told from the heroine's (Janie) point-of-view. Acker develops an extreme stream-of-consciousness style (including illustrations) which I found very challenging to read, at points the novel is almost incoherent as Janie's life spirals ever downwards. This short but explosive novel concentrates all the bad things that could happen to a girl in the late twentieth century. It's a surreal personal and political horror story, and one of the most powerful novels I've ever read.
