Grieving the loss of her husband Sydney has put her graduate studies on hold for the time being. She took a job tutoring Julie Edwards a beautiful but slow girl. Mr. Edwards (Julies father) touches Sydney's heart while Mr.s Edwards is cold & unwelcoming. Sydney falls in love w/one of the Edwards adult sons. She chose the wrong son and ends up mending a broken heart. The story takes place in a New Hamshire house that is rich with past (Shreve often uses this house as a back drop in her stories) It's a beautiful of love, loss and a longing for family.
