This work has the feel of a first novel, with all of the praise and criticism which that implies. The novel bursts with dark whimsy and originality - to complete the oneiric atmosphere which he achieves with aplomb. However, there are some rough plot points, the narrative does not flow easily (at times, it feels like a proto-blog). However, there are glimmers of promise in his prose - certain original turns of phrase, interesting plot points and surprising twists.
Some people have called this a work of magical realism. I wouldn't exactly put this on par with any work by Gabriel Garcia Marquez or a comparable, bona fide magical realist author, but one can see where the confusion could arise. There are elements of fantasy which impinge upon the reality of the characters' lives. But it lacks that subtle something which makes South American writers the undisputed masters of the genre.
If you are looking for a good fantasy read, this may not entirely satiate your craving. It's an interesting foray into a semi-fantasy realm, but it doesn't blend the elements of reality and fantasy into a seamless whole.
Taking the good with the bad, there is hope for this author yet. It was a interesting enough to want me to read more of the author's work to see how he develops in his craft.
