Too, too, too slow at the beginning, but then the story brings the reader in. The characters are deep and well drawn; the end is quite charming.

Just started this; the main character's Chinese mother has just been diagnosed with Alzheimer's... When a friend found out I was reading Amy Tan, she told me that many of Tan's books have the same theme. I wonder which theme she means.
