  • Book Review: Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer Share

It is no secret that I have highly ambivalent feelings about the works of Stephenie Meyer. Perhaps it is because I was the independent and headstrong girl who got involved with a psychopathic control-freak and was nearly destroyed by his madness. Mor ... (read full critics)

I think Stephenie Meyer is a very good writer, reading the Twilight Saga has been a pleasure up until Eclipse. I'm afraid to say that this book was absolutely awful, the story, the main characters, the end disappointed me so much. By the end of the book I could not even recognize who Bella and Edward were, they felt like strangers, their personality changed so drastically from the first books.
This fourth book made me realize that Bella Swan isn't a very strong human being, everything she does has no logic, it made me so furious when she decided to keep the baby she was carrying, she risked losing everything she worked for in the past three books, all for a child who was killing her inside. Pondering over this situation, it also made me wonder - if the love Edward and Bella felt for each other was so forbidden, why was it possible for them to conceive a baby?
The whole baby thing made me so angry, angry at the fact that this book was becoming so unrealistic, angry at Stephenie Meyer who was robbing us of the vampire stereotype, I was just so furious at the whole prospect of vampires reproducing with humans, it was impossible.
However, from the irritation I had for Bella, Edward and their baby, slowly I sympathized more with Rosalie, understanding her jealousy and the unfairness of Bella having everything she wanted handed to her on a plate, I've grown to actually like this character.
Then there was the whole situation of Jacob imprinting on Renesmee, that was completely unnecessary in my opinion, Jacob was one of my favorite characters, and I really wished he would have drifted away from the Cullen/Swan family, but instead he's stuck with them for eternity.
This book became more of a fairy tale than anything else, it felt like a fan fiction gone wrong in my opinion, fans of the Twilight saga who wanted a serious ending to this series will definitely be disappointed.
