Charles Ryder, a lonely student at Oxford, is captivated by the outrageous and decadent Sebastian Flyte. Invited to Brideshead, Sebastian's magnificent family home, Charles welcomes the attentions of its eccentric, artistic inhabitants the Marchmains, becoming infatuated with them and the life of privilege they inhabit -- in particular, with Sebastian's remote sister, Julia. But, as duty and desire, faith and happiness come into conflict, and the Marchmains struggle to find their place in a changing world, Charles eventually comes to recognize his spiritual and social distance from them.

    Brideshead Revisited.

    A true masterpiece.
Charles, Sebastian and Julia are some of the most finely sketched character ever created.
Brideshead holds a magnetic power hard to escape, both to the protagonist and to us.

Saw the BBC series of this when I was growing up, but never read the book. In retrospect the TV series was a very accurate representation of the book, and the images from it haunted me throughout my reading.

  • Unfortunately, I can't connect with this author's style at this point of my life. I will give it a try at some other point.

  • Mostly good...

Really enjoyed the first 2/3 of the book, which compared well to the best F. Scott Fitzgerald works. But the religious conflict in the final third was dull and involved a lot of fatuous dialogue.
