  what a pity

  the finale did not convince me as much as the book, which is pretty brilliant. The story of the mother's death, what for? As an explanation for the protagonist's loose life? The crazy wife was enough I think...

  The 80s spawned plenty of stories about coked-up yuppies with hard partying lifestyles to distract from the emotional ruin of their unfulfilled lives and painful past. This was one of the classics. Maybe it might feel a little dated as a relic of that era, much like the cheesily obviously drum-machined giant echo snare and overprocessed guitars on alot of records back then. However, I'm willing to bet the morality tale still holds true. Hitting rock-bottom never felt so good.
