It was shortly before midnight. The city lights were visible when the Egypt Air announced the descent to Cairo airport. I could not understand much of what he said as he spoke in Arabic, but it must have been about the Mother of all Cities Whose Name Means Triumphant. All the Egyptians looked out of the little windows delightedly.
Great was my disappointment the next day when I saw the city in broad daylight. Cairo turned out to be a scruffy city with most of its history hidden behind centuries of decay that was way beyond the picturesque.
If you want to learn about the city's wonderful past you could do little better than to read this book. Mr. Rodenbeck is a good storyteller, bringing to life many of the buildings and streets you may see on your trip around the city...Continua
